SHATTUCK FFA OFFICERS COMPETE AT ARIZONA NATIONALS

PHONENIX, ARIZONA - Shattuck FFA students compete in the Arizona National Livestock Show. Over the Christmas holiday, several families and students from Shattuck and Woodward traveled the desert for the Arizona National Livestock Show, held from December 28th-31st.  The ANLS started in 1948 with just 449 cattle entries, but has grown to be one of the premiere stock shows in the Southwest and the country.  This year, an impressive 5,520 entries were exhibited by students from across the country.  Projects spanned all breeds of livestock and included an ag mechanics contest.  Shattuck Senior and FFA Officer Madisen Sanchez said, “This was my favorite show so far.  The warm weather didn’t hurt, but the laid back atmosphere and small show feel was probably what made it so great. Our travel group was fun, and having their support while I was there showing meant a lot too.  That dynamic makes a travel stock show so much more enjoyable, when we all can cheer each other on.”   Madisen placed 4th with her black face crossbred lamb, 9th with her Natural Lamb, 10th and 11th with her wether goats, and qualified for the final round of the Goat Showmanship Contest.

Senior Sydney Melton also traveled to Phoenix with some of her ag mechanics projects. She placed first in the “Small Welding Art Project,” class with a decorative rose piece, and placed 2nd in the “Ornamental Art Project,” class with her horseshoe cross.  Sydney also build an outdoor bench, which not only earned her the Champion place for the Large Project Division, but was also named Best of Show Ag Mechanics Project.  By winning Best of Show, Sydney was awarded $1,000, and her bench was sent to the Phoenix Museum of Art to be auctioned off for the ANLS Scholarship Fund.  The bench sold for $2,100.

Shattuck FFA is gearing up for Spring contests, and our upcoming Ag Booster Auction on January 29th at 6:00 pm.  Be sure to mark your calendars, come enjoy a delicious meal and check out our awesome auction items. Congratulations to Sydney and Maddy on their success!
