SHATTUCK FFA LEARNS THE ART OF BREAD MAKING

By Ezabela Herber

SHATTUCK, OKLAHOMA- On October 10th, the Shattuck Ag Ed classes showed up to the Ellis County Fairgrounds kitchen bright and early to embark on yet another culinary adventure. This week’s instructor was Mrs. Lynda Latta. Mrs.Latta works as the Ellis County Family & Consumer Sciences/4H coordinator, and is the backbone of the local 4H program. From helping young kids learn how to sew, to helping with the County Free Fair and Stock Show. Lynda plays a huge role in the production and coordination of many of the local events that involve 4H or FFA.  Luckily, Mrs.Latta had a few hours to spare of her time to educate the students on an educational topic.

When the students arrived, Mrs.Latta had all of the ingredients organized into groups for various stations and assigned each student a product to make. The students had learned in class the science of baking bread. This was a hands-on activity to display. Starting with how the yeast works, when combined with heat and water. This then allows the yeast to activate and do its job, creating these delicious pastries.

The students learned how to make dough from scratch, form the dough, along with the process of bread rising, and baking.  Not only did Mrs.Latta teach them how to bake the bread, but she also taught them how to properly evaluate a loaf of bread!

At the end of the day, the students had made bread loaves, dinner rolls, braids, pan rolls and cinnamon rolls. There was a large amount of product made and consumed. The numerous pans of leftovers were sold to Shattuck School staff, in an impromptu bake sale held that afternoon.

Mrs. Latta has 35 years experience in this career.  She attributed her baking knowledge to learning from a local legend, Mrs. Travis Bowman.

The Shattuck FFA Chapter would like to extend a special Thank You to Lynda Latta for lending our students her time and expertise to teach this class about the science of baking bread.
