SHATTUCK FFA OFFICER SPOTLIGHT

By: Ezabela Herber

SHATTUCK, OKLAHOMA- This week’s Officer Spotlight series, I have chosen to interview our third senior officer. Sydney Melton, Shattuck FFA’s Chapter President. Sydney has been raised in Mutual, Oklahoma. Both her and her older brother, Kendall, have grown up around agriculture their whole lives. Sydney’s father, Bruce Melton, competed in livestock judging while in college. When asked what made her decide to join FFA Sydney responded, “I was introduced to it as an 8th grader and fell in love with it as I got to meet new people, travel around and learn new things.” Sydney has been active in FFA since her first day as a member. She currently shows goats and cattle, as well as competing in vet science CDE competitions. With Sydney being so active in FFA, I decided to ask her what her favorite memory made in FFA so far was. She responded, “Going to WLC and meeting people from all around Oklahoma and our nation and getting to visit our nation’s capital. Not many people have gotten to experience this trip, so Melton was eager to share more about her time spent at WLC when being interviewed. “WLC has been the best part of my summer. I got to meet people from all over and hear about their experiences in FFA. I also meet people that will be my life long friends. And WLC was like something you can’t describe as you go in nervous and counting down the days until you’re home but then you come out of it wish you could stay a bit longer with your new friends. And being in amazement knowing you are walking where some of our greatest change makers were and it inspires you to be like them.” I asked Sydney if she could give an upcoming FFA member advice, what would it be. She responded, “You will have highs and lows in your FFA career but it’s all worth it at the end of the day because it’s the most rewarding thing in my life” Sydney is also active in the ag mechanic side of things. When asked what FFA means to her, and how it has changed her life, she said, “FFA is helping others without being asked, cheering on people that are from a different chapter, teaching younger kids about agriculture, inspiring the next generation of FFA members. All these things I have done and it’s made me a better person and let’s me give back to my community.” Shattuck FFA is well represented by our Chapter President. Thank you Sydney for sharing your FFA experience!
