Shattuck AG Olympics
By: Erika Meier, Shattuck FFA Reporter
This year, the third annual AG olympics was held on September third. It took place at Hoss Manske’s, a local farmer and big FFA supporter. AG olympics is a series of games/events in which different teams compete in. The teams are split by a draft. The seven FFA officers (Addie Swanson, Hagan Sprouse, Lexi Kelln, Erika Meier, Ashton Tomlinson, Aisley Neubauer and Macy Pshigoda) and one chairman (Mikayla Hamaker) have several meetings and draft their team members by turn until all the FFA members have a team. Each team would pick a color and dress in that specific color. This team is used not only for the AG olympics, but will accumulate points throughout the school year, and one team will end up winning. The events in the AG olympics are as followed:
The first event was the t-post drive- this required six members from each team. Two members would be at each t-post and when the whistle blew, the first team of two would take turns driving the post to a certain point. After they reached this point, they would hand off the post driver and the next two members would do the same. Whichever team drove all three posts in first won this event.
Second was the egg relay. Each team would line up, using all members. The end person would hold an egg on a spoon and pass it down until a line was crossed. The first team to pass their egg down and cross the line without dropping the egg won the egg relay.
Third was the water bucket relay, which required six members. The six members would line up with some space in between them. The goal of this event was to fill a smaller bucket with water then pass it down the line to fill up a five gallon bucket. The first team to fill their five gallon bucket won the water bucket relay.
Moving on to the milking relay. Four members would take turns milking water from a handmade five gallon bucket with calf bottle teats attached, and they would fill small cups first and pour them into a larger cup. They first team to fill up their larger cup won.
Next was the tug of war event. It was set up in a bracket form so only one team could win. There was a huge mud pit filled with water so the losing team would be pulled in as they lost.
Following tug of war was the hog calling contest. Each team had one member come up and give their best hog call and the winner was determined by a few judges.
Last but not least was the hot dog eating contest. One member from each team came up to a table. Whoever could eat the most hotdogs in two minutes won this event.
The purpose of the AG olympics is to get every member involved and show them how much fun FFA can be. It’s a great way to give younger members experience and it’s also good interaction for everyone involved. Many members went all out and had face paint on their faces and the rest of their bodies. At the end of all the events, there were burgers and hot dogs cooked by AG teacher, Chris Kelln. Eating good food is always a great way to end a hard day of competition.
