SHATTUCK FFA OFFICER SPOTLIGHT

By Ezabela Herber

SHATTUCK, OKLAHOMA - As students return to school,l prepared to get back into the routine, I decided it was time to do an Officer Spotlight, and interview our Shattuck FFA President, Sydney Melton.  Sydney was raised in Sharon, Oklahoma, and travels every day, across three school districts to attend SHS and take part in our awesome ag program.  When asked what made her decide to join FFA Melton responded, “My dad was an ag teacher and told me all the stories he experienced and so I wanted to have some of those experiences myself. I’ve grown up a farm kid, loving agriculture, and I couldn't wait to become a member of the FFA.”

Sydney has been active in FFA since her first day as a member, “I show goats, compete in livestock judging, do speeches and weld.” Though she has had many memories made in the FFA, she says, “My most memorable moment was when I won the skillathon at OYE and got my scholarship, which was bittersweet because winning meant I couldn't compete in the contest again.” I asked Sydney if she could give an upcoming FFA member advice, what would it be. She responded, “Find something you're passionate about and do it. It may take a little time to find something you really love, but the great thing about FFA and ag class is that there are so many options, and they are all so different.”  Melton is also very active in the vet science contests when competing in CDE competitions. She says, “I have always known that I wanted to work in the field of veterinary medicine in some way, so I really enjoy the vet science CDE.  It has allowed me to really learn about real life veterinary practices.”  When asked what FFA means to her, and how it has changed her life, Melton said, “The FFA is such a large organization, with the common goal of supporting and building up the future of agriculture, and I think that is such a great thing.  Through the FFA, I have had opportunities that I would have never experienced if not for belonging to this organization.  I have been pushed and encouraged to develop leadership skills that have made me more confident, and have changed me into the person I am today.”  ItÅ› safe to say that Shattuck FFA is well represented by our Chapter President. Thank you Sydney for sharing your FFA experience!
