OPENING CEREMONIES CONTEST
By: Emmie Swanson

STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA - “FFA Members, why are we here?” This year Shattuck FFA had a total of twelve students participate in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies contest, which is meant to highlight a chapter’s ability to properly conduct official meetings. The Shattuck team placed 1st in the Woodward Region Contest, and advanced to the State tournament held in Stillwater last Tuesday. The team missed the state finals by one point, placing third in their heat. The opening ceremonies contest is a great way for young students to dip their toes into public speaking, with the security of competing as a team. After the contest, the Shattuck team, consisting of 8th and 9th graders, were introduced to Shattuck Alumna Logan Holt. Logan is working on her Master’s degree and currently holds the title of Senior Administrative Support Assistant for the OSU wrestling team. She offered a tour of Gallagher-IBA, and Boone Pickens Stadium that did not disappoint. After seeing the basketball arena, the girls got to walk down onto the football field. Official dress rules went out the window as the team tossed their heels and jackets to sprint across the field and make some imaginary winning touchdown plays. It seemed clear that this was the highlight of the tour…...until Logan walked the girls downstairs and straight into wrestling practice. The OSU wrestling team are basically celebrities on campus, and have won more NCAA team championships than any other school. Head Coach John Smith, a legend himself, greeted each Shattuck student with a smile and a handshake and welcomed the girls to sit down and watch practice. Although most of the Shattuck FFA girls probably don’t follow the OSU wrestling team, none of them complained about having to sit and watch the wrestlers practice for their next match. Shattuck FFA is not only appreciative to Logan for the amazing VIP tour, but also to several SHS graduates now attending OSU, who turned up to support them at the contest. Despite the results of the Opening Ceremonies Contest, Shattuck FFA had a great day in Stillwater.
