WOODWARD, OKLAHOMA - On Wednesday, July 14, word quickly spread that the Big 3 Field Days had been canceled. Like other ag teachers, the teachers in Ellis County began canceling hotel reservations and contacting students. But then, Clay Hamil at Arnett called Chris Kelln at Shattuck and asked the question, “Why can’t we hold a contest?” Mr. Kelln then called Bailey Poer at the Woodward County Fairgrounds and event center. She allowed that the schedule was open and it was doable. Amber Rhinehart at Fargo started gathering group leaders. Mr. Hamil and Mr. Kelln started locating animals to use in the contest. Sponsors were secured for banners. Through the cooperative efforts of ag teachers and fairgrounds staff, one short week later, on Wednesday July 21, the 1BIG1 Livestock judging contest was held at Woodward, OK. The Woodward Chamber of Commerce provided donuts and coffee. High Plains Technology Center brought their diesel powered ice cream maker and provided home-made ice cream for everyone. Arnett New Holland and the Bank of Western Oklahoma sponsored and presented banners to the high teams and individuals. Almost 600 FFA and 4H members from Oklahoma and Texas evaluated cattle, hogs, sheep and goats. Cooperation, volunteers, sponsors are all words that enabled this contest to happen. Thank you to all that helped and participated.
